Lucy (Lucia) Saunders
Hola! My name is Lucía. I moved to Spain when I was 11 and returned to the UK 20 years later. My father was Spanish and being able to vote in the first democratic elections in over 40 years at 18 was a proud moment for me. While in Spain, after going through the rigorous and tedious Spanish schooling system, I went on to take a degree in English Philology. I would have preferred French, but suddenly there was a huge cry out for English lessons. I started tutoring small groups of school children when I was 18 – there were very few English native speakers in those days or foreigners at that! I’ve always enjoyed teaching, so when I returned to England I took the CELTA course to teach English, which complemented my degree. I was fortunate to live near Bournemouth with its plethora of English Schools for foreign students. While my son was growing up, I started teaching Spanish, which I do to this day. As for my son, he got an A* in his Spanish A ‘level! I keep my Spanish fresh by listening to the latest Spanish novels on audible. All my family are in Spain and I still keep in touch with old friends on WhatsApp when I’m not visiting.
