Languages Week 2026

Welcome to The Big Beautiful Languages Week with The Language Academy!

The Big Beautiful Languages Week is our first annual celebration of everything that makes languages joyful, fascinating, and potentially life‑changing. Across six vibrant days, students step into a world of culture, creativity, and connection – exploring French, Spanish, Italian, Catalan, Portuguese, Ukrainian * and more through hands‑on workshops, food, music, trivia, and real‑life experiences.

This is not a week of “lessons.”  It’s a week of discovering, tasting, listening, speaking, laughing, and living languages. Please find the full list in the timetable above, and book from the list at the bottom of the page.

Students will dive into the hidden regions of Europe, explore dialects and accents, master verbs and pronunciation, and experience the rhythm of each language through songs, poetry, and storytelling. You will learn how to navigate life abroad and understand cultural traditions.

Alongside our language‑specific sessions, students can enjoy a rich programme of general events: wine and cheese tasting, the language of coffee, TEFL tasters, study‑abroad pathways, careers in languages, opera, and our famous multilingual quiz nights.

You can pick and choose, attending multiple sessions (in which case, check out our Freedom Pass!) or just the ones that particularly interest you.

The Big Beautiful Languages Week is a reminder that languages aren’t just subjects – they’re bridges. They connect us to people, places, opportunities, and versions of ourselves we haven’t met yet.

Description

This session is designed to increase your fluency, by introducing a series of discussion points around topics.  You will develop your vocabulary range both in terms of individual words and expressions.  You will practise structures and grammatical elements in context.  Lots of fun, and you will increase your confidence! The idea is to have you conversing and debating for all of the class. Our French Songs sessions will unashamedly take you back to the days when France was the pinnacle of romance, the smoke of Gauloise cigarettes hung permanently in the air and Brigitte Bardot (RIP) was more of a sex symbol than a glorified zoo-keeper!  Each of these 2 sessions (French Songs 1 & 2) will introduce 3 classic French songs by singers such as Edith Piaf.  You will not regret joining us (did you see how we did that?).  Come to either or both – the sessions will be indepent of each other and you don’t need to have attended the previous one!  Suitable for all but will be appreciated most by lovers of all things French, with some language knowledge.

Description

Italy has a fine tradition of cantautori, who flourished particularly in the mid to late 20th century.  Some of us can still remember when the originals came out!  Join us for either or both of these sessions to be charmed by the lyrics of iconic singers such as Fabrizio de Andre and Lucio Battisti.  You will be transported to a land of bruschette, vino, sole ed amore while never leaving Winchester.  Each of these 2 sessions (Italian Songs 1 & 2) will introduce 3 classic songs – and we might even get you singing along!  Come to either or both – sessions are independent of each other, so you don’t need to have attended the previous one!  Suitable for all but will be appreciated most by lovers of all things Italian, with some language knowledge.

Reuben, a languages student at Oxford, is an Instagram languages sensation, with 123k followers of his page @reubenlingo, which features not only posts about the various languages he speaks to varying degrees (10 of them!) but also observations on linguistics, which can be described simply as the study of how languages work.  Reuben is not an “influencer” but just someone who loves and is fascinated by languages – so he is on the same wavelength as everyone at LA!  We are delighted to welcome Reuben to Winchester!

No need for a description of this session, really, except to say that instead of pretty pictures of cheese on a screen, we will provide you with nuggets of REAL CHEESE!  The object is for you to identify said cheese.  We will not blindfolding you, so there will be visual clues (tip – mozzarella does not come in a blue version).  Cheese is traditionally paired with wine so, before you ask, yes, there will be wine included!

Description

The Language Academy (LA) aims to offer you the “cure for monolingualism”!  We believe that in these days of online learning, there is still very much place for face-to-face lessons, where you can come together with like-minded people and enjoy the challenge of learning another language.  We are very pleased that many of our students have taken multiple courses with us, working their way up through the levels. As well as traditional evening courses, we run 5-hour immersion days, which include a snack lunch, intensives courses over several days, courses for kids, language holidays abroad, and ‘mastery of English courses’. We charge £1 just so we can keep track of how many students are attending.

Chris Polatch, our Founder, will talk about his long career in language teaching and running language schools.  You will hear about his time working in Milan and Lisbon, managing a large language school in the hyper-competitive Oxford Street area of London as well as as his brush with a murderer-to-be while on a consultancy trip to Uruguay.  Chris will also reveal his conclusions on how to learn languages.  Spoiler alert – there is no easy way!
